Pension Engagement Season

Pay your pension some attention
Organisations from across the pensions industry, including Railpen, will be joining forces this autumn/winter to help boost members’ engagement with their pensions.

Pension Engagement Season is a new initiative that aims to increase people’s basic understanding of pensions and encourage those who have savings to keep track of them and plan for their retirements with added confidence.

Led by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA), Pension Engagement Season will run from September to November 2022 and its launch will coincide with the annual Pensions Awareness Week (12-16 September), run by Pensions Geeks.

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, Pension Awareness has decided to postpone the live shows for the annual Pensions Awareness Week. The events have now been rescheduled for Monday 31 October to Friday 4 November 2022.

Pension Awareness has stated that this change will not affect the order of the timetable or any bookings you may have made:

'To mitigate the impact of the rearrangement and any inconvenience it may cause, we have automatically shifted all booking registrations for our Pension Awareness live shows to the week commencing the 31 October.

That means, for instance, that if you had booked on to the session 'How much pension do I need?' — originally scheduled to air on Monday 12 September at 12:30pm — you will now automatically be registered to attend the rearranged slot on Monday 31 October at the same time.

If you find that you have other availability, you can still make bookings for the new dates.'

Pension schemes and providers are being urged to join in and to help raise awareness with members by amplifying the ‘Pay your pension some attention’ message in any communications and events.

The ‘Pay your pension some attention’ campaign will share tips on how members can check their retirement savings, trace their pension providers, and keep their details up to date. It will also help people prepare for the forthcoming pensions dashboards, which will show savers all their pension pots in one place.

Pension Engagement Season will also include the PLSA’s Annual Conference in mid-October and National Pension Tracing Day on 30 October.

How you can get involved

Pension schemes, employers, providers, regulators and government departments are all encouraged to take part in Pension Engagement Season and urge members to pay their pension more attention.

Here are a few ways you can help to support your members:

  • encourage members to visit railwayspensions.co.uk or btppension.co.uk and register for their personal accounts so they can keep track of their pension savings and make sure their details are up to date.
  • use your website and/or internal communications to let members know about Pension Awareness Week and the live shows taking place during the week
  • use your internal communication channels (intranets, emails, staff bulletins etc) to promote the website at railwayspensions.co.uk or btppensions.co.uk, where members can find videos, handy planning tools and important information about their pension benefits and options.
  • Suggest members visit railwayspensions.co.uk/resources/news or railwayspensions.co.uk/resources/blog or btppensions.co.uk/resources/news to get the latest updates and insights about pensions.
  • Follow @RPSpensions or @BTPPensionFund on Twitter and spread the word for your members to do the same to get updates on the scheme and wider pensions topics.
