Making member websites easier to use

employer-portal-size-300x180
The Railways Pension Scheme and British Transport Police Force Superannuation Fund websites now feature an accessibility toolbar, which allows members to use the websites in a way that works best for them.
To help make our services accessible to all members, the RPS and BTPFSF websites have now been improved to give members extra support if they need it.

Both websites now feature a new accessibility toolbar, which allows members to use the website in a way that works best for them.

Aiming to make things as easy as possible, the toolbar can support everyone but it will be particularly helpful if members have:

  • Visual needs
  • Hearing needs
  • Cognitive needs
  • Neurodivergent needs
Railpen wants to make online services for members available to everyone. This new feature means they can have content read aloud, as well as customise how they can view the site to suit their individual needs.

New features to help members understand and manage their pension

Available on desktop, mobile and tablet, members can customise the RPS and BTPFSF websites using the accessibility toolbar, with options such as:

  • a text to speech feature, so you can hear the website content instead
  • changing font sizes
  • applying filters to help with colour-blindness
  • highlighting page links
  • numerous language choices
  • modifying text and colour contrasts
  • pausing flashing animations
With this new accessibility tool, if members have additional needs they can use the websites in a way that works best for them, and therefore manage their pension more effectively.

Activating the toolbar

The toolbar can be accessed on the RPS and BTPFSF websites via a blue circle with the person icon in it – this can be found near the bottom right of the screen.

It can also be accessed anywhere on the websites at any time, and nothing has to be downloaded to use it. Members can customise how the websites look and work even if they’re not logged into their online myRPS or myFund account.

They can select the option/s that they need, and choose more than one at a time. If they don’t want to use a particular feature, they can just deselect that option.

For convenience the toolbar will remember preferences for the next time they visit the site. When visiting the website again, members will need to re-launch the toolbar but it’ll remember their previously selected preferences.

There’s also a reset button located at the bottom of the toolbar that will clear all the selected options.

To turn off the toolbar, simply select the white cross in the top-right corner of the toolbar.
