A step in the right direction, moving towards a paperless pension

In response to member feedback, we’re taking steps to reduce the scheme’s environmental impact and make it easier for members to access their documents online.

From the end of 2024, members of the Railways Pension Scheme (RPS) and British Transport Police Superannuation Fund (BTPFSF) will be able to get some of their pension paperwork online only rather than by post. If members have changed their address, they’ll also need to tell us online.

The first documents to be moved online for members are:

  • Annual Benefit Statements (ABS)
  • Summary Funding Statements (SFS)
  • Pension Saving Statements (PSS)
  • Member newsletters, including Review, Extra, Insight, Focus and Penfriend
  • ‘Wake-up’ letters – a reminder for members to start making plans for retirement, which members get before they’re due to stop work. We may still send members a pre-retirement pack to help them prepare for retirement.
  • P60s
  • Pension year-end letters

Members may not get all of these documents, as it depends on their membership. Any documents members do get will move online only from the end of 2024, unless they opt in to print.

If members opt in to print, these documents will be sent to them by post.

What does it mean for members?

If they have a myRPS or myFund account, members will get their documents online from the end of 2024. Unless they tell us they want to opt in to print.

If members opt in to print, they’ll get their documents by post, even if they have an online account.

If they don’t have a myRPS or myFund account AND don’t opt in to print, members will get their documents by post. So, if they’d prefer to get things online, members will need to register for an online account.

RPS members can register here.

BTP members can register here.

What do members need to do to go paperless, or keep getting documents in print?

Go paperless

If members are happy to get their documents online, they don’t need to tell us. But, they will need a myRPS or myFund account to access them.

If they already have an account, members will get some documents online automatically from the end of 2024. However, they’ll continue to get things in print until then.

If they haven’t got an account, members can register quickly and easily online.

The registration page includes helpful instructions, and a short video on how to register.

Continue with print

Members can opt for print, even if they have a myRPS or myFund account, but they’ll need to tell us.

To opt-into print, members can fill in the form below. They can also call the Helpline if they prefer.

BTP members can fill in the form to opt-into print here.

Members may still get communications giving them the chance to opt in throughout 2024, but they’ll only need to tell us once.

Do nothing

If members don’t register for a myRPS or myFund account, and don’t opt into print, their personal documents will still be sent to them by post. However other items like newsletters, will be online only from the end of 2024.

It’s up to them

However members choose to get their documents (print or online) it will apply for all of their periods of membership, and for any documents that are moved online in future. But they can change their mind by contacting us at any time.

Where can members find their documents online?

Their online documents will be in the ‘My Library’ section of their myRPS or myFund account.

Their latest Annual Benefit Statement, P60s and pension year-end letters will be in the 'View Statements and Estimates' page in the 'My Pension' section.

Newsletters can be found on the dedicated newsletter page, without logging in.
